Filament storage: keep it dry, or dry it first?
Separate sealed storage from active drying before buying extra equipment. Follow the exact filament, reel and device instructions.

Start with the question is this roll already moist, or am I keeping a dry roll dry? A sealed container and an active dryer do different jobs. An extra appliance is not an automatic first-day purchase.
Method: Manufacturer documentation checked October 1, 2026. We have not tested storage containers or dryers, measured moisture, or compared printed results.
Store a dry roll between uses
Keep the roll in a sealable container with suitable desiccant, following the container and desiccant instructions. Desiccant absorbs moisture; its replacement or regeneration needs depend on the product.
Prusa’s USS Drybox instructions describe a sealable container with silica gel that slows moisture absorption. They explicitly distinguish that job from drying filament that is already moist. Do not treat a box, a humidity reading or a few packets as proof that a wet roll has recovered.
Dry moist filament using the exact instructions
Prusa’s drying guidance explains that absorbed moisture can affect printing. Poor surface finish or stringing can be a reason to investigate; they are not a moisture measurement or a diagnosis of every failed print.
Before heating, check the filament maker’s temperature and duration, the reel’s heat tolerance, and the device’s instructions. A procedure for one material or spool is not a universal recipe. A device must accommodate that combination; do not assume an automatic spool unit provides active drying.
Prusa cautions that household ovens can fluctuate or lack sufficiently low settings. This guide therefore gives no oven recipe. Stop when you cannot establish a suitable procedure for your exact roll and equipment.
Make the next purchase deliberate
For a first roll, choose a material suited to the project and a package your setup can feed. Plan how you will close and store it after use. If you need active drying, check the exact instructions before comparing devices.
The starter-cost examples include an extra retail spool; they do not include a dryer. Add any equipment you actually need to your own budget planner amounts. No storage method here promises a fixed shelf life or guaranteed print quality.
