Filament with a spool or a refill: which should you buy first?

How to compare the package format before a lower filament price becomes the wrong first purchase.

If you have no compatible reusable reel, choose filament with a spool, or include the cost of the correct reel in your order. If you already have the matching reel, a refill is another package to compare.

A spool is the reel that holds the filament. A refill is filament supplied without that reel. The lower headline price is useful only if the package works with what you have.

Method: Manufacturer documentation checked October 1, 2026. This is a purchase-format guide, not a refill installation procedure or a physical compatibility test.

Start with the reel you have

Anycubic’s US refill page lists buying a reusable spool, reusing one or printing one from its linked model. Those are options for obtaining a reel; they do not identify the exact reel in your cupboard.

The same page names several brands in a broad compatibility claim. Check the specific spool and refill instructions before buying. A brand name alone does not establish fit, and we have not tested cross-brand combinations.

Use the maker’s installation instructions for that combination. This guide does not substitute a generic mounting method.

Read the whole selection

Check these five details before comparing prices:

  1. Material: PLA, PETG or another specified material. Our first-filament guide helps narrow PLA versus PETG.
  2. Diameter: the size required by your exact printer.
  3. Color: the selected variant, which can change price or availability.
  4. Weight: the amount of filament in the order, including whether it is a multipack.
  5. Package: filament with a spool, a refill, or a separately sold empty reel.

A sample included with a printer and a retail spool are separate items. Check the exact printer’s box contents before counting on an included reusable reel.

Check the feed system separately

Before buying, check the roll and material against your particular feed path, including any automatic color unit. Do not infer that direct-feed support establishes support in every AMS or ACE unit. Use current instructions for the exact hardware.

Compare the cost of a usable first order

Include any needed reel as well as filament, tax and shipping. Compare equivalent filament weights. A refill may be useful when you have the matching spool; a complete spool may be simpler when you do not.

The starter-cost guide deliberately budgets an additional retail 1 kg spool, using dated US examples. Enter your selected package’s current quote in the budget planner, and include a separately purchased reel in the filament amount if you need one.

For a complete PLA spool, our four-offer comparison shows why item price and order cost can differ. Before buying tools or extra hardware, check what can wait.

Keep the opened roll ready

Separate storing dry filament from drying a moist roll in the storage guide. For the hardware decision, compare three printer models and five exact starter configurations.
