A first 3D printer is not the entire shopping decision. You also need enough filament—the plastic strand the machine melts and deposits—to make the things you have in mind. For ordinary learning and several small projects, this guide compares each printer with one additional 1 kg roll of PLA filament on a spool, the reel that feeds it. The three example carts came to $237.99–$474.99 before tax and shipping on October 1, 2026.

These are researched US store prices, not checkout quotes or firsthand reviews. We have not owned or tested these printers. Prices, stock and delivery charges can change, and your final total depends on your address.

The additional roll is a useful budgeting allowance, not a universal technical requirement for the first print. The A1 mini box includes a 20 g filament sample, which can be enough for a tiny object. The P1S box lists filament with a spool but does not say how much. The Enhanced Kobra S1 page lists a filament sample without specifying its mass. The table simply treats all three consistently: printer plus a separate retail kilogram.

Which of the three makes sense for your projects?

A1 mini: a smaller starting investment. Its 180 × 180 × 180 mm build volume can accommodate many small clips and organizers, but not every one-piece household part. It is open-frame rather than enclosed. Choose it for a lower purchase price if the actual projects you want fit; check a downloadable model’s oriented size in a slicer instead of trusting a photograph or its assembled dimensions. If automatic color changes matter, the A1 mini Combo includes AMS lite: $329 for the bundle, or $347.99 with the same extra roll. That is an alternative cart, not a required accessory.

P1S: more nominal print space and an enclosure. The P1S has a 256 × 256 × 256 mm advertised build volume, although Bambu Studio defaults print height to 250 mm unless you follow a separate manufacturer procedure. A bigger bed can make a difference for a wide organizer. The enclosure and activated-carbon filter are features, not proof that every material is safe to print in an unventilated room; follow the filament maker’s guidance and plan the room accordingly. The P1S alone is the $417.99 cart above. If you want automated multicolor handling, the P1S AMS Combo is $567.99 with the extra roll. That selected bundle includes AMS, rather than AMS 2 Pro.

Enhanced Kobra S1: multicolor equipment already in the bundle. The Enhanced Kobra S1 ACE 2 Pro Combo has a nominal 250 × 250 × 250 mm build volume and includes its automatic filament-handling unit. The older classic Kobra S1 Combo was advertised at $399 but its selected US variant was out of stock at the September 29 check; do not build a buy-now budget around that older price. The $459 Enhanced printer bundle plus a separate PLA roll is $474.99. Its included multicolor hardware does not mean you need to buy several colors on day one.

The three carts are not a feature-matched printer-only price contest: the Kobra bundle includes a color-handling unit while the entry A1 mini and P1S do not. A multicolor system (Bambu calls its versions AMS, Anycubic calls its units ACE) changes filament automatically between colors or spools; a single-color household object does not need one.

A spool, a refill, and optional extras

A full spool is a roll wound on a reusable reel. A refill is filament sold without that reel and must be mounted on a compatible reusable spool before use. For the Bambu examples, the selected Jade White PLA Basic was the 1 kg “filament with spool” option at $18.99, not the cheaper refill. The Anycubic Black 1 kg PLA was $15.99; its product page describes its rolls as spooled with a reusable spool. Check the exact package/variant again when ordering. These branded examples are convenient documented carts—not a rule that you must use printer-branded PLA. Any alternative needs the right 1.75 mm diameter and a compatible feed/spool format for your chosen printer.

Extra colors, a filament dryer, replacement nozzle, adhesive, fasteners or furniture are project-dependent, not automatic first-day purchases. Electricity, unsuccessful prints and your time also cost something, but these examples do not assign them invented dollar amounts. PLA is not automatically suitable for hot locations or food-contact uses.

Before buying, reopen the selected links, confirm the variant and stock, check that your filament arrives with a spool, and review tax, shipping and any bundle changes at checkout. The numbers above remain dated observations before tax and shipping, not a promise of today’s delivered price. If a particular household model motivates the purchase, review the dimensions of its printable parts, not just its finished-object footprint, and check their oriented fit in a slicer before choosing a printer.

Choose the first filament package

Before adding a roll to your order, read First filament: PLA or PETG? for material tradeoffs and Filament with a spool or a refill for package choices. Then use your selected package’s current quote in the budget planner.

Keep the opened roll ready

Separate storing dry filament from drying a moist roll in the storage guide. For the hardware decision, compare three printer models and five exact starter configurations.
